Definition: modular blockchain

A blockchain architecture that separates the data and the processing elements. Instead of the data, transaction processing and consensus processing all built into one monolithic program, a modular blockchain separates these functions in modules that can come from different parties and then link together. There are various approaches to separating the functions, and after more than a decade of monolithic blockchains, the modular approach is making inroads. See Fuel, consensus mechanism and blockchain.
